The UPF-IDEC and CB Gavà sign an agreement to give a pioneering programme in Sports Mediation

The Mediation programme in the area of education and sports that the Basketball Club CB Gavà will create in collaboration with the UPF-IDEC is a pioneering project in Spain, as it is the first time that a sports institution sets up a mediation programme within the institution. In Europe, only Inter de Milan has an initiative of these characteristics.

The president of CB Gavà, José María Barrabés, explained that setting up a mediation plan will help them to manage conflicts that may arise in the Club more effectively, starting with dialogue, and helping the Club to be a socially shared space for coexistence.

The event was attended by The Mayor of Gavà, Raquel Sánchez, and the Academic Director of the UPF-IDEC, Daniel Serra, who highlighted the importance of starting this Mediation Plan with the CB Gavà. According to Serra, setting it up will open up the University to society, so that it isn’t seen as a distant, closed institution. Additionally, it will be positive for our students, as the agreement signed with CBG will also give them the opportunity to do work experience’.

The Director of the Master in Professional Mediation of the UPF-IDEC, Javier Wilhelm, emphasized that this programme will be a great challenge for the Club whose philosophy is aimed at collaboration rather than competition. A club centred towards peace, dialogue and sharing, rather than results’. Willheim spoke about mediation and the tools necessary to resolve conflicts, such as asking, listening, negotiating, participating and also prevention, respect and education for peace. Tools that should help change the way that problems are treated, but also the way in which we relate to each other.

Finally, co-head of the Social Area and Coordinator of the Programme of Mediation and Coexistence of CB Gavà, Germán Barrena, explained that ‘the objective is to strengthen knowledge through training, promote dialogue as a tool for resolving conflict and make decisions together, work to prevent, accept differences and favour coexistence’.

The CB Gavà Mediation and Coexistence Plan will start this year 2014 and last until 2016, when it plans to create its own Mediation centre that everybody in the Club will be able to use.
