Federico Mayor Zaragoza will present the opening conference of the Master in Scientific and Environmental Communication
Ex-director of the Unesco, Federico Mayor Zaragoza will be responsible for presenting the opening conference of the 19th edition of the Master in Scientific and Environmental Communication, a Master which the IDEC-Pompeu Fabra University offers.
Federico Mayor Zaragoza, president of the Foundation Culture of Peace, will present the conference: “Scientific Communication and Society”. It will take place on Friday 7 February at 6.30pm at the IDEC-UPF headquarters (Balmes 132-134) and also include the participation of Enric Banda, director of the Science and Environment Departments of “La Caixa” Foundation, and Vladimir de Semir, director of the Master in Scientific and Environmental Communication.
The Master in Scientific and Environmental Communication will this year reach its 19th edition. It is a pioneer Master, unique in Spain for this specialty, and which almost 400 students have completed. Its training programme is based on the Scientific Communication Observatory, created at Pompeu Fabra in 1994 and directed by Vladimir de Semir, as special research group at the forefront in the quest for, the teaching and transfer of, scientific, technical and medical knowledge.
The Master is especially aimed at scientists, doctors, journalists, museum and science centre specialists, research, universities or pharmaceutical laboratories, among others, and is supported by the Obra Social “La Caixa”.
A guest of honour
Federico Mayor Zaragoza is mainly known for having been General Director of the Unesco between 1989 and 1999. But actually Mayor Zaragoza has a collection of many important positions: Doctor in Pharmaceuticals and university professor. Rector of the University of Granada (1968-1972) and Member of Parliament in the UCD 1977-1978. He was also Minister of Education and Science with Adolfo Suárez (1981-1982) and Member of the European Parliament in 1987.
Since the year 2000, Mayor Zaragoza has been been president of the Foundation Culture of Peace dedicated to connecting and motivating institutional networks, organizations and individuals who stand out for their commitment to the values in the culture of peace. He has also proved to be very active in motivating the public who encourage alternatives to the political, economic, social and cultural reality in Spain.
