Unirun, a university running race inspired in the Cambridge-Oxford regatta, is born

Unirun tendrá lugar el 8 de marzoOn 8 March, Barcelona and Sant Adrià de Besòs will host the first edition of Unirun, a running race that seeks to pose a new challenge in university athletics.

The race, spearheaded by all twelve Catalan universities through the ECU (Catalan University Sport), is backed by the Barcelona City Council, the General Secretariat for Sport and the Sant Adrià de Besòs City Council, and is managed by Gaudium Sports.

Unirun, the popular running race which aims to get all twelve Catalan universities (of which, Pompeu Fabra will be team 4) involved, takes the classic Cambridge-Oxford regatta, an annual rowing competition between these two prestigious English universities, as a frame of reference.

Participation (to register, race participants must have been born in 1999 or earlier) is open to the entire university community and anyone associated with the twelve institutions: current, former and future students, teaching and research staff, suppliers, supporters and family members.

The race, which collaborates with the 2014 Marató de TV3 charity initiative on heart diseases, will make its way through Barcelona's Sant Martí neighbourhood, Parc del Fòrum and Parc de la Pau in Sant Adrià de Besòs and will cover 6,779 metres, the same distance as England's classic rowing event.

Aside from the inter-university competition, the event will also include an individual competition and the University Road Race Championships of Catalonia.

To take part in Unirun, you must first register online (open until 3 March 2015 at 11:59 pm) on the race's website (www.unirun.cat). When registering, which costs between €8 and €10 (depending on whether or not you have a timing chip), you must indicate the university you wish to represent.

Each team will wear a shirt featuring the name of the university it represents. The universities will be numbered as follows:

  1. Barcelona University
  2. Autonomous University of Barcelona
  3. Polytechnic University of Catalonia
  4. Pompeu Fabra University
  5. Lleida University
  6. Girona University
