THE 100 under 50 universities 2014

A more “objective” methodology to evaluate the younger universities

The first edition of the 100 under 50 league table was published in 2012 in order to demonstrate that, for some universities, it was possible to achieve excellence in a relatively short period of time. According to its proponents, the league table is an interesting tool for evaluating which higher education systems emerge amidst the hegemony of the UK and USA in this area.

The 100 under 50 ranking employs the same five categories and thirteen indicators as the general ranking system. Each category is weighted the same in both rankings but the 100 under 50 league table places less emphasis on the academic reputation of the institution in favour of more other “more objective” indicators.

The five categories and indicators employed are:

  • Research: volume, income and reputation (30%)
  • Citations: research influence (30%)
  • Teaching: reputation, student/teacher ratio, doctorate/undergraduate ratio, PHD’s awarded/number of academic staff ratio, income/number of academic staff  ratio(30%)
  • International outlook: of people (students and academic staff) and of research (7.5%).
  • Income from research and innovation (2.5%)
