The UPF, top university in the country in teaching quality and capacity to attract students

On 7 June 2011, the Fundación
Conocimiento y Desarrollo
(CyD), presided over by Ana Patricia Botín,
presented the CyD 2010 Report ( executive
summary
, pdf document, 1.60 MB, 11 pp.). for the third time, the report
includes a Spanish national public university ranking, drawn up on the basis
of four categories: the capacity to attract new students, teaching quality,
research quality and the standard of doctorates.

The results of Pompeu Fabra University in relation to the previous edition
are significant: it has confirmed its position as the top Spanish university
in capacity to attract new students and in teaching quality.

Top Spanish university in teaching quality and capacity to attract students

In order to calculate the first category, four variables were taken into account:
the percentage of first option pre-registered students in relation to the total
number of places offered (where the UPF is in 4 th position), the percentage
of students registered in their first option in relation to the total number
of newly registered students (also 4 th ), the average entry mark (2 nd ) and
the percentage of newly registered students living in Spain but outside
the province
(25 th ).

Teaching quality

As regards teaching quality, this was calculated through two sets of indicators.
The first referred to academic efficacy , calculated based on the performance
rate ( where the UPF is the top Spanish university ) and abandonment rate (10
th ). The second referred to the teaching resources of centres, calculated
on the one hand based on the current expenditure per student (the UPF is the
2 nd university in Spain) and the ratio between students and research teaching
staff (11 th ), and on the other by analysing the physical resources available
to the University , taken from the ratio between students registered and equipment
: classrooms and/or libraries (22 nd ) and computer rooms (9 th ). Finally,
this category also includes an indicator relating to the degree of openness
to the outside , calculated based on students registered in the first and second
cycles with their family residence outside the province, where the UPF drops
down to 27 th position.

Research quality

As regards research quality, the University has outstanding positions in six
of the seven indicators used in order to prepare this category: highest index
of six-year research periods achieved by permanent lecturers
(3 rd
); lowest percentage of research lecturers without six-year research
periods
(2 nd ); number of theses in relation to
the number of doctors (2 nd ); number of articles published in Spanish or foreign
journals included in the Journal Citation Report (JCR) of the ISI (Institute
of Scientific Information) for the period 2000 - 2009 and in relation to the
total number of full time teaching and research staff (10 th ) and income
from R + D of
teaching
and research staff
equivalent to full time (6
th ).

The main objectives of the CYD report are emphasising the decisive
roles of universities in the Spanish economy and society, spreading importance
of universities for improving the productivity and competitiveness of the Spanish
economy within a context of growing globalisation and, finally, learning from
the experience undergone in relation to the collaboration between universities
and companies.
