Round table: 'Book: publishing, graphic production and industrial production'
The presentation of the \\\"Postgraduate Course in Industrial Book Production\\\", which will commence on June 29th of this year, was held on 27th February. The act was attended by publishing professionals and students.
Course directors Rafael Pozo and Javier Aparicio presented the programme as \\\"an intensive course in book specialisation\\\", which relies on the experience and track record of the Master\'s in Publishing (MEDI), offered by IDEC-Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Based on the MEDI subject \\\"The anatomy of a book\\\", taught by Rafael Pozo, its aim is to train specialists who are capable of understanding and controlling the process of producing a book.
The presentation was followed by a round table which was chaired by Javier Aparicio under the title: \\\"Books: publishing, graphic production and industrial production\\\", a reflexion by professionals in the sector on the main topic of debate among publishers, printers and designers: industrial book production.
The speakers exchanged different points of view and professional experiences. Below are some of the conclusions they came to:
- \\\"We cannot forget that initially, books are cultural products. Decisions about the content are attributable to the author, but decisions regarding the continent of the book are attributable to the publisher\\\". Javier Aparicio, Director of the Master\'s in Publishing. Co-director of the Postgaduate Course in Industrial Book Production.
- \\\"From my professional experience, I understand that books have a graphic part and a productive part, with the aim of generating benefits. The author comes up with the book and we, from our publishing business, must interpret these criteria as faithfully as possible, also with a view to selling the book.\\\" Josep Moreno, Director of Production, Editorial Planeta.
-\\\"Thanks to IDEC-Universitat Pompeu Fabra we can offer the course we are presenting today. We have to improve communication between publishers and designers in order to create the conceptual bases which go to make up and favour the creation, publication and design of books\\\". Jesús del Hoyo, Dean of the Col·legi Professional de Disseny Gràfic de Catalunya.
- \\\"We should differentiate between the author\'s original and the processes and work which make up the publisher\'s original and the reproduction original.\\\" Rafael Pozo, author of Diseño y Producción Gráfica. Diseño y Producción Gràfica and co-director of the Postgraduate Course in Industrial Book Production.
- \\\"The industrial process must cover all the publisher\'s requirements in order to produce a book in the most suitable way, in line with the parameters established in the order.\\\" Joan Mases, a uthor of Costes y Presupuestos en el Sector Gráfico.
