Pompeu Fabra University sets up the International Book Observatory of Barcelona
The International Book Observatory of Barcelona has been created by Pompeu Fabra University, in association with the UPF-IDEC Masters in Publishing, which turns 20 this year. The idea was developed by cultural journalist Sergio Vila-Sanjuán and developed in collaboration with the founder and director of the Masters in Publishing, Javier Aparicio Maydeu.
After 20 years of educating students in publishing, the Pompeu Fabra master program provides an ideal framework under which to house this Observatory, enjoying as it does the support and collaboration of the entire Spanish editorial sector; Grupo Planeta, Anagrama, Penguin Random House, Grupo 62, Google, Círculo de Lectores, the Catalan Publishers’ Association, the Frankfurt Book Fair, CEDRO and many other groups. “This new, independent academic body has been set up in order to analyze the main challenges for the editorial sector and promote publishing and the book industry”, says Javier Aparicio.
The International Book Observatory of Barcelona will compile information generated at all levels, from the local to the global, about the world of books and publishing. It will encourage debate amongst professionals in the sector and dialogue between the publishing industry, public administration and other sectors. The Observatory will examine the business of the publishing world, its position in the field of knowledge, cutting-edge areas of research and its relationship with social and political institutions. Thus, the Observatory will take a three-pronged approach:
- Provide from Barcelona a permanent, ongoing survey on matters relating to books worldwide.
- Provide Barcelona’s book sector with regular orientation on the principal matters of debate.
- Interact with institutions in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and Europe, in order to communicate the strategic importance of the sector and of Barcelona as a publishing capital, and to analyze new directions and strategies to follow.
“The Observatory will analyze transformations, trends and challenges on a global level, and will evaluate, guide and suggest suitable strategies for future professionals in the publishing world”, the founders say.
The International Book Observatory of Barcelona is directed by Sergio Vila-Sanjuán, who developed the idea, and Javier Aparicio Maydeu, founder and director of the UPF-IDEC Master in Publishing. The Observatory will include an international consultation commission made up of the most renowned publishers and professionals of in the publishing sector.
