Inauguration of the Communication-Poblenou Campus
On Friday 13th February the UPF Communication-Poblenou Campus was officially opened. Every day a total of almost 3,500 people ?comprising students, teaching staff and administrative personnel- will occupy this new area, dedicated to research and production in the field of communication and information technologies.
Since 7th January, this campus has been the new study centre for degrees (Audiovisual Communication, Linguistics, Journalism, Advertising and Public Relations, Translating and Interpreting, and technical engineering as well as higher level degrees in Information Technology and Telecommunications) and postgraduate courses (three doctorates, nine university masters and eleven masters and postgraduate diplomas).
The new campus, which has a total area of 34.000 m2, has combined the rehabilitation of the old Ca l\'Aranyó factory buildings with the construction of new buildings which feature modern and advanced technical facilities.
The authorities were due to visit the new campus buildings, which was to include the ground floor of the La Fàbrica building where the CRAI (Research Centre for Learning and Research) is located and the Tallers building (which houses the integrated editing room, the electronics and radio-communications laboratory, the TV set and the translation booths, as well as other equipment).
The committee was headed by UPF Rector, Josep Joan Moreso, who was accompanied by the President of the Generalitat, José Montilla; the Mayor of Barcelona, Jordi Hereu; the State Secretary for Universities, Màrius Rubiralta; and the Councillor for Innovation, Universities and Business, Josep Huguet, but as it crossed Gutenberg Square towards the La Fàbrica building, they were heckled by a large group of individuals who had congregated in the square earlier that morning. Seeing the anti-social and violent attitude of the group, the acts which were to take place in the square, namely the placing of the last brick on the campus with the inscription \"2009\", speeches by the authorities and the aperitif for all those attending, were suspended and the committee went down to the lower floor of the square. There the president of the Generalitat signed the UPF Book of Honour in front of a relief of Pompeu Fabra, which is situated in the entrance hall of the auditorium.
