UPF is the leading Spanish university for scientific output
On 7 of July the Spanish Knowledge and Development Foundation 2013 (CyD 2013), report was issued, drawn up by experts at the Spanish National Research Council’s Institute of Political Science and Public Goods and the SCImago, evaluating the scientific output of public and private higher education institutes in Spain for the period 2008-2012.
With regard to the quality of scientific output, assessed according to the standardised impact of published scientific articles, Pompeu Fabra University is once again in first place, ahead of the University of Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, improving its scores from last year.
In order to calculate standardised impact, both the number of times a work has been cited and the importance or relevance of the publications in which they are cited are taken into account.
The CyD report also considers other quality indicators like the Q1 percentage, which measures how much of an institution’s total scientific output appears in publications rated in the top 25% in their subject area. According to this indicator, UP and UPF lead the table, in first and second place respectively.
As for the excellence with leadership percentage, an indicator that measures the most-cited research projects led by the institution, making reference to the visibility and initiative of researchers, UPF was rated ahead of UB and UAB, with the Rovira i Virgili University taking first place.
The reports concludes that, of the 30 institutions with the best quality indicators, Catalan institutions are at the head of the normalised impact rankings, ahead of the global average, showing a significant level of internationalization.
