Overview

Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) is a new university that began operating in 1990-91. In the meanwhile, UPF's Department of Economics and Business has evolved into a leading centre for research and teaching. The Department ranks as one of the outstanding departments in Europe, rated sixth in the Tilburg University Economics Ranking 2004-2008 in terms of the publications of their faculty in top-five rated journals. Being a department of economics and business it is fairly large and heterogeneous, an international community with more than 20 different nationalities.

Graduate education in the department is organized around two programmes: the Ph.D programme, that aims to train research scholars for careers in either academia or the business and government world, and the Master programmes, more applied in nature and less oriented toward careers in academia. The programmes are offered through the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics and the Barcelona School of Management. Every year around 150 new students enroll in the graduate programmes, creating a truly international atmosphere with about 90% of students from abroad. After completing their degrees, alumni pursue diverse careers all over the world. Recent PhDs have attained jobs at top economics departments and international institutions. Graduates from the Master programmes hold jobs in a variety of fields, including financial, managerial and consulting.

In addition to the Ph.D. and Master programmes, the department is heavily involved in teaching at the undergraduate level. The BA programmes offered at UPF have been systematically at the top of the rankings prepared by the Spanish journal El Mundo, ranking the BA in Economics first in Spain and the BA in Business second in Spain, a country well-known for its reputed business schools.
